Parnkalla Trail Upgrade Starts Its Next Phase

Flinders Port Holdings is pleased to announce the next phase of the Parnkalla Trail upgrade project is soon to start.

Commencing in 2018, the $1.2M upgrade is delivering vital improvements to the Port Lincoln section of the Parnkalla Trail. The upgrades adjacent to the rail line have made the trail more vibrant and accessible for users, as well as visitors arriving through the port of Port Lincoln. Continued improvements to the safe movement of pedestrians around wharf operations is another key outcome of the remaining stages.

The next section of work to be completed before the busy grain season will be new fencing, bollards and line markings through the truck marshalling area to provide separation between the Parnkalla Trail and areas restricted to wharf operations. This will enable public access to continue through this section of the trail in a safe manner. Works are expected to begin in late October and access will be restricted during this time.

Furthermore, upgrades to the section of trail between the Kirton Point refuelling wharf and the grain truck marshalling area are scheduled to commence after the grain season, in February 2021. We look forward to seeing this final stage of the wharf precinct upgrade open to the public once work is complete.

We remind the public that Berth #10 wharf area is not for public vehicle access – please see below image for where public designated parking is available at Brennan’s Wharf car park.

Speaking about the upgrades, Port Lincoln Mayor, Brad Flaherty, said:

“Council appreciates the strong and continued support by Flinders Ports and Viterra for the Parnkalla Trail upgrade project through our Wharf Precinct. These upgrades significantly improve the look of the trail, but importantly will make the recreational public access areas of the wharf safer and better defined. To achieve this outcome despite increased truck movement at the site is a great result and will ensure public access can continue into the future.”

Flinders Port Holdings CEO, Stewart Lammin, also commented on the project saying:

“We are delighted to have been able to support the upgrade of the Parnkalla Trail, specifically around Port Lincoln. The upgrade will enable the public to continue experiencing this part of the Eyre Peninsula safely. Flinders Port Holdings plays an important role in our state’s coastal communities and the work being undertaken on this project is an example of how our engagement often goes beyond the port.”

The project has been co-funded by the City of Port Lincoln, the State Government Planning and Development Fund, Flinders Port Holdings and Viterra.
