Mining and resources are one of the key drivers for the Australian economy, and in South Australia Flinders Port Holdings has a long history of working with the sector. The state has a rich and diverse commodity base and is a world-renowned producer of copper, uranium and iron ore, all of which are exported through our ports. But the state is also a globally significant producer of zircon, gypsum and mineral sands, while also having globally significant smelting operations.

We facilitate exports across all of these commodities through a network of bulk handling facilities both at Berth 29 at Port Adelaide and at our key regional ports. Beyond immediate export facilitation we also offer storage through the berth 29 bulk handling precinct at Port Adelaide where we offer 25,000 square metres of storage capacity for mineral concentrates.

But while Port Adelaide is the busiest of our ports, several of our regional ports also play a pivotal role in the mining and resources sector supply chain. For example, we recently completed the $14 million regeneration of Thevenard. The port, located in Ceduna in the state’s west, provides a gateway to market for one of the largest gypsum producers in the southern hemisphere – Gypsum Resources Australia.

Further up the supply chain, we also facilitate significant smelting and refining operations. At Port Pirie, in the Spencer Gulf, we enable the import of mineral concentrates and export of finished product through the Nyrstar smelter, one of the largest lead smelters in the world. This experience, and our integration across ports and logistics, puts us in a strong position to partner with mining and resources firms. We work with most of the main mining companies with operations in South Australia such as Iluka, Oz Minerals, BHP and Hillgrove Resources, but there is capacity for further expansion.

The extensive road and rail network to our ports, and our established logistical expertise in the sector mean we are well set not only to facilitate further SA resources exports but also those from neighbouring states where several operations have the opportunity to improve export efficiency and cost by looking at exporting via South Australia.
