About the role

Reporting to the Operations Manager, Whyalla you will be responsible for overseeing and coordinating the barge operations.

Key responsibilities

  • Involved in Berthing and sailing Barges, Mooring of vessels, Barge and SupraMax Vessels
  • Loading Barges to meet stability requirements
  • Point of contact for ship loader
  • Completion of computerised cargo logs in Microsoft Excel
  • Liaise with tugs and pass on instructions, assist securing of tug as required
  • Conduct regular safety inspections of the barge and report faults to FOTB manager
  • Allocation of casual staff to assist with operations
  • Any other operational requirements

The successful candidate will also be required to carry out other duties as directed, which can include project work or other administrative functions.

To be successful in this position you will be a driven and eager applicant who has demonstrated experience in the coordination of barge transportation and all tasks associated with this.

About you

Skills, Knowledge and Experience (Essential)

  • Demonstrated experience in the coordination of barge transportation and all tasks associated with this activity.
  • Understanding of tasks associated with transhipment operations.
  • A sound knowledge of South Australian Marine regulations
  • Sound PC skills to include Windows, Excel and Outlook
  • Good verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work within a team environment.
  • A sound knowledge of OHS requirements and legislation
  • Sound literacy and numeracy skills
  • Current driver’s licence
  • Maritime Security Identification Card (Already hold, or be eligible for, a Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC).  This involves obtaining a National Police Check)

This is a contract position for 18 months in Whyalla, during this time you will be required to be readily available to work over a span of hours & days within a 7 day/ 24 hour roster (day, evening and midnight shifts) to meet with our operational needs.

About the role

Multiple casual positions available.

The successful candidates will join the existing group of equally motivated individuals, and be responsible for participating in the day-to-day operations associated with barge operations as well as other tasks.

Key responsibilities

  • Conduct safe mooring of vessels (tie ups and let go’s)
  • General maintenance work
  • Barge preparation and clean up
  • Ensuring a safe work environment by adhering to strict safety procedures
  • Participating in ongoing training

To be successful in this position you will be a driven and eager applicant who has experience working in teams and is safety conscious.

Full training will be provided, however any previous experience working in manual handling or general labouring would be looking favourably on.

Marine pilots are employed by Flinders Ports to help Captains safely navigate their vessels to the berth once they enter the port’s waters.

This role is a crucial role for Flinders Ports because a marine pilot’s skill and knowledge ensure that ships arriving in port do not run aground, collide with other vessels or run into infrastructure, such as navigation buoys.

All marine pilots are required to hold a Master Class 1 Certificate of Competency.

A Marine Services Team employee may be employed to carry out mooring, deckhand or maintenance related duties as well as Pilot Launch Master duties at any of Flinders Ports locations. Employees are required to work on an as needs casual basis when shipping operations demand and are remunerated in accordance with the Enterprise Agreement.
