Manager Port Operations, Flinders Ports
About the role
Reporting to the General Manager of Flinders Ports this role is responsible for overseeing commercial vessel activities within Flinders Ports Operations. It also covers the day to day management of marine and port operations both locally in Adelaide and in our Regional Ports.
Your team will include Vessel Traffic Services and Regional Operations Managers within the State. You will also receive assistance from the Group in the form of financial, legal, human resource and risk advice and services as required.
- Assist the General Manager by acting as a deputy Port Security Officer under the Maritime Transport and Offshore Security Act and responsible for all security functions within the company and advise visiting ships on all aspects of port security and ensuring compliance
- In conjunction with the General Manager and group CEO, address media and customer enquiries relating to Flinders Ports activities while developing and fostering relationships with Government personnel and industry groups
- Manage and monitor the vessel traffic operations statewide by managing the VTSO team and related services.
- Assisting the General Manager Flinders Ports in pilotage related matters and at times may be required to perform a “hands on” pilotage role and carry out pilotage duties
- Responsible for managing a team to ensure the area of operations are met in a cost effective and productive manner with a high focus on safety, environmental compliance and risk management
- Participate in and oversee the management of Port Authority emergency response activities
To be successful in this role, you will have previous extensive experience in the port industry as well as Master Class 1 Certificate of Competency.
You will also have:
- Excellent leadership skills, able to communicate a clear strategy and direction and support employees to achieve organisational and personal goals
- Understanding the practices associated with the management of a port including pilotage, mooring, launch operations and towage operations
- Experience in the control and coordination of the functions of personnel engaged in marine activities
- Management skills including the ability to plan, develop and utilise human, financial, physical and technical resources
- Demonstrated change management involvement and proven ability to drive positive cultural change within the organization

This is a permanent full time position working Monday to Friday with out of hours work as required at times to perform “hands on” pilotage and support regional operations.

Future Opportunities - Marine Pilot
Marine pilots are employed by Flinders Ports to help Captains safely navigate their vessels to the berth once they enter the port’s waters.
This role is a crucial role for Flinders Ports because a marine pilot’s skill and knowledge ensure that ships arriving in port do not run aground, collide with other vessels or run into infrastructure, such as navigation buoys.
All marine pilots are required to hold a Master Class 1 Certificate of Competency.
Future Opportunities - Marine Services Team Member
A Marine Services Team employee may be employed to carry out mooring, deckhand or maintenance related duties as well as Pilot Launch Master duties at any of Flinders Ports locations. Employees are required to work on an as needs casual basis when shipping operations demand and are remunerated in accordance with the Enterprise Agreement.

Flinders Logistics offers material handling and transport logistic services, providing scoping and feasibility studies on tailored logistics solutions to meet a range of client needs. Services provided are as a mobile plant operator and are part of a multi-skilled team based in Port Pirie.
The team will also be involved in loading and unloading of cargo in which Flinders Logistics has an involvement.
Future Opportunities - Logistics Operations Team Member (Casual), Adelaide
Provide services as a mobile plant operator and a range of other services as part of a multi-skilled team at Flinders Logistics locations but predominantly based in Port Adelaide.
The team will also be involved in rail yard operations at 29 Berth, Port Adelaide and loading and unloading of ships using mobile harbour cranes.

Flinders Warehousing & Distribution is new a division of Flinders Logistics, offering a solution for customers to their warehousing needs with close access to import and export transport facilities. Future opportunities in this multi skilled team will include clerical duties, forklift operators, reach stacker operators and general labourers.
