Flinders Ports is partnering again with the South Australian Maritime Museum to provide the extremely successful schools program, which has benefitted almost 7000 local students since its inception in 2008.

“The feedback we’ve received from both teachers and students has been tremendous. It’s a testament to the skill and dedication of the team at the Museum. This collaboration allows us to give back to the local community and enables young people to understand the port’s seafaring history, while experiencing how the business works today,” said Mr Stewart Lammin, General Manager of Flinders Ports.

In addition to sponsoring the schools program, Flinders Ports also funds the Museum’s increasingly popular community access days and key exhibitions.

Speaking at the South Australian Maritime Museum’s launch of “Rough Medicine: Life and Death in the Age of Sail” on 29 May, Mr Lammin was impressed by the Museum’s enduring appeal to younger audiences.

“Flinders Ports has a major focus on supporting young people in the Port Adelaide area. The Rough Medicine exposition is basically a history of medical treatment on the high seas and is certain to engage, entertain and educate,” said Mr Lammin.

Flinders Ports and the South Australian Maritime Museum have a proud 12-year partnership. In 2002, Flinders Ports first provided funding for an exhibition which proved to be instrumental in shaping the institution’s future by triggering the award of a Commonwealth Development Grant. This much needed finance enabled the Museum to re-invent itself, bringing maritime history to a 21st century audience.

The current exhibition, “Rough Medicine: Life and Death in the Age of Sail” is on display at the South Australian Maritime Museum until 30 November. Educators are welcome to contact the Museum for further information about the schools program, which runs throughout the year.
