Flinders Logistics has won SafeWork SA’s award for ‘Best Solution to an Identified Workplace Health & Safety Issue’. The award winning system, known as the Container Spreader Guidance Apparatus (CGA), competed against 35 high quality nominations, before making it into a shortlist of five finalists.

Flinders Logistics was joined by two other winners, City of Charles Sturt and SA Water – such was the standard among the final five.

Tom Phillips AM, Presiding Member of the SafeWork SA Advisory Council praised this year’s award winners for viewing legislative requirements as the minimum standard, rather than their ultimate goal.

Andrew Pellizzari, General Manager of Flinders Logistics said, “We had already successfully tackled dust emissions, but identified a risk to our people in the ship loading process.  Eliminating this hazard would complete the safety continuum and we were determined to achieve this.”

The CGA is an automated guidance system for containers and is used on the wharf to direct a rotating container tippler onto a full container.  Crucially, it has removed the injury risks to personnel from manually positioning the tipping spreader onto a container, but it has improved efficiency too.  Ship loading times are faster and damage to containers has also been reduced.

“We see the CGA as an important step forward for safety and efficiency, not just at Flinders Logistics but for the ports and logistics sector throughout Australia,” said Mr Pellizzari

Flinders Logistics’ container guidance system has been shortlisted as a finalist for the national Safe Work Australia Awards.
