The destination is Port Pirie for the board and executive team of the Flinders Port Holdings group – such is the importance of the company’s burgeoning business interests in the mid-north. Senior managers and directors have set off from their Port Adelaide headquarters to embark on a two-day regional board meeting. The itinerary features tours of the group’s port and logistics operations at Port Pirie and informal meetings with key local leaders, Mayor John Rohde, Nyrstar Executive, Bertus De Villiers and Council Chief Executive Officer, Dr Andrew Johnson.

“The board recognises Port Pirie as a strategically significant mid-north hub for the group’s ports and logistics operations. It is crucial to see these operations first-hand and meet with key community stakeholders” said Mr John Marlay, Chairman of Flinders Port Holdings.

The group’s logistics business, Flinders Logistics, which launched in 2010, expanded into Port Pirie, opening a new operations centre in the town in 2014. Flinders Logistics, which specialises in delivering safe and environmentally sound logistics for the mining sector, now employs around 25 local workers at its Port Pirie facility. The company has been using its patented dust suppression technology business to cut dust emissions and ship delays for vessels unloading concentrates at the harbour.

Flinders Port Holdings group’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Vincent Tremaine, said, “The logistics operations have delivered for the community and for our business in Port Pirie. They are both an environmental and a commercial success.”

Although the resources sector is in a cyclical downturn, Flinders Ports, the group’s ports business has been working with industry and community stakeholders to identify viable export supply chain options through Port Pirie for the mining sector.

“Our goal is to be ready for when market demand picks up. We want to offer environmentally efficient supply chains with Port Pirie as a gateway to world markets for South Australian mineral exports,” Mr Tremaine said.
