Statement on the Temporary fishing closure in Port Pirie area

The Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA) has announced a 12-month fishing closure in waters directly adjacent to the Port Pirie township. The closure is effective as of Tuesday, 15 September. The closure decision was made by PIRSA following advice from SA Health and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

PIRSA has advised that the closure is in response to information from a recent project conducted by UniSA. While the closure was not a recommendation from the project report, the Department has taken the decision as a precautionary step.

Recreational access to the berth at Port Pirie remains open, for information on the new temporary fishing guidelines and any other enquiries please visit pir.sa.gov.au/fishing or go to the SA Fishing Guide app.

Flinders Port Holdings, in collaboration with other stakeholders, continues to support the ongoing UniSA Port Pirie research project on potential marine environment remediation.
