These new additions are a further $5 million investment in the Flinders Ports’ pilot boat fleet replacement strategy.

“Flinders Ports has invested in the best technology possible to suit the needs of our clients and stakeholders, and we are glad to be able to support Australian owned and operated Hart Marine, who are building the vessels” said Captain Carl Kavina, General Manager, Marine Operations at Flinders Ports.

The Providence and Norfolk are identical to the Alert and Reliance vessels that were launched in 2015. They were built by Hart Marine, an Australian owned and operated boat builder, at a cost of around $2.5 million each.  Constructed to NSCV criteria with a 2C classification and measuring 16 metres long, the Providence has an overall beam of 5.43 metres.  They have a top speed of 27 knots and a maximum draft of just 1.5 metres which gives her excellent manoeuvrability.

“These particular vessels were selected after Flinders Ports conducted extensive stakeholder research to identify the best vessel to fit the needs of our busy Ports, whilst maintaining the highest safety and environmental standards.  They have demonstrated their elite performance in the water, and so we are thrilled to be able to add two more of these vessels to our fleet to service our customers year round” said Captain Kavina.

These new vessels incorporate a self-righting mechanism, which is an essential safety feature that will safeguard the crew in the event of a capsize.  An innovative beak-bow design provides enhanced sea handling characteristics, reducing stress and fatigue for the crew.
